Making Wines from Australia for the world
The inspiration for this unique wine brand came when three friends – one a renowned winemaker, one a fourth-generation grapegrower and the third, a wine sales consultant – Frederick Liu, stumbled across this old vineyard and recognized the quality of the fruit. The trios’ passion for this vineyard and the region, lead to the creation of Greenock Estate Wines.
In 2013, commercial production commenced at Greenock Estate Wines from grapes sourced from this longstanding vineyard. Over the subsequent years, more varietals sourced from family owned, multi-generational grapegrowers experienced in cultivating exceptional grapes from the timeless Australian landscape has assisted in crafting this unique wine story .
Our aim at Greenock Estate Wines is simply to make wine for people to enjoy while remaining a wine producer focusing on quality.
Frederick Liu “Freddy”– CEO
In 2006, Freddie Liu left his homeland of China to undertake postgraduate study at the University of Queensland.
With a background in finance and accounting, he spent a further two years plying his trade before launching a new business in 2009 with two partners from the Queensland wine industry.
This Australian adventure ignited his passion for winemaking and saw Freddy embark on a significant, new direction in his life and career.
In July 2013, Freddy settled down in Australia’s most famous wine region, the Barossa Valley, and it was here that the story of Greenock Estate Wines began.
This unique wine brand began to bear fruit after three friends – one a renowned winemaker, one a fourth-generation grape grower and the third, Freddy, then a wine sales consultant – stumbled across this 1940’s vineyard and recognized the quality of the fruit.
Freddy has since immersed himself in winemaking and has discovered his own wine style, which is very appealing to the Asia market.
He largely credits this success to the unreserved tutoring of Steve Kurtz and Peter Gajewski, who together, offer more than 60 years experience in grape growing and winemaking.
Freddy is driven by his ambition to craft world-class, premium Barossa Valley wines, in his own distinct style.
Jo Irvine –Winemaking Consultant
The winemaking career of Jo Irvine began at the tender age of 7, when she followed around after her father Jim Irvine (known as the “Master Merlot Maker”) to undertake the ritual tasting of ferments and wine blending.
Today, Jo is a multi-award-winning wine maker of international acclaim and proud owner of Wine Wise Consulting. She has been inducted into the “Barons of the Barossa Wine Fraternity” for her absolute dedication to the Barossa Wine Industry.
Jo brings her expertise to the fore at Greenock Estate – highly regarded for her vast knowledge on a wide range of subjects including winemaking, varietal styling, vineyard varietal selection, blending, marketing, oak selection and so on.
She is immensely passionate about the quality of the wines produced by Greenock Estate, believing that “great wines are created by synergy and attention to detail both in the vineyard and in the winery”.
Steve Kurtz – Viticulture
Fourth generation grape grower, Steve Kurtz, is proud to continue 80-year-old winemaking traditions in his own family business. His Great Grandfather began growing grapes in the Barossa Valley back in the 1930’s and this very same block is still worked to this day.
Prior to becoming Chief Winemaker at Kurtz Family Vineyards in 2006, Steve gained over two decades of experience with leading Barossa Valley brands – Saltram Wines, Orlando and Wolf Blass.
During this time, Steve was fortunate enough to work alongside winemaking greats. He is forever grateful for the knowledge they passed on to him and has relished the opportunity to be able to pay this forward.
A fierce custodian of his own ancestral vineyards and the Barossa Valley’s rich wine culture – Steve’s passion and knowledge plays an enormous part in the continuing success of Greenock Estate.
Phil Reedman MW – Brand Ambassador
Renowned Master of Wine, Phil Reedman, has been appointed the gate keeper to act as a global style consultant in the overseas market and preserve the ethos of Greenock Estate’s wine styles.
Phil’s illustrious career in wine began back in the late 1980s. He graduated with honours from the WSET Diploma and later became a partner in Australian Wine Agencies. A pioneering importer of Australian wine into the UK, Phil contributed substantially to the import success and brand strength of many South Australian wineries, including Barossa favourites, St Hallett and Heritage Wines.
During this time, Phil also acquired his Master of Wine – widely regarded to be the peak qualification of the world’s wine trade.
He then went on to source and select the portfolio of Australian wines for leading UK supermarket chain, Tesco. This unique role helped Tesco to develop a significant market advantage and led to Phil developing Tesco’s portfolios from New Zealand, California, Chile and Argentina.
For the past decade, Phil has worked internationally as a consultant to retailers, importers and wineries to assist them to increase their sales. As well as being Editor for Australian Wine Showcase Magazine.
Greenock Estate CEO, Freddie Liu, credits Phil’s encouragement and involvement as being the driving force in heightening the creativity and excellence of their winemaking.
